Raytheon Contracted for AN/TPY-2 X-Band Radar

TheMissile Defense Agency(MDA) has awarded not-to-exceed $243 million modifications to a previously awarded contract to Raytheon Technologies andRaytheon Missiles and Defensefor one AN/TPY-2 radar system to supportTerminal High Altitude Area Defense(THAAD) Battery #8. The modification raises the cumulative face value of the contract from just over $1 billion to more than $1.2 billion, with work on the system to be performed at Woburn, MA from April 2021 through the end of 2024. The MDA (Redstone Arsenal, AL) is the contracting organization.

The AN/TPY-2 (see the figure) is a transportable X-band missile defense radar system that can detect, track, and discriminate between threat and non-threat ballistic missiles. It can operate in two modes: In forward-based mode, it detects ballistic missiles after they have been launched. In terminal mode, it guides interceptors towards a descending missile to help defeat the threat. It aids the THAAD system by guiding a THAAD missile towards a threat. The X-band radar system has a flawless performance record against all classes of ballistic missiles.
